EZGO charger cuts off before full charge

I have a Cushman GC400 and was given a newer EZGO 36V charger (automatic) so I put the cushman crows foot plug on the charger and when I plug the charger in, it will charge for an hour at the most and then clicks off, even though the batteries are not fully charged. I have the wires coming from the plug on the cart going straight to the + and - battery posts on the batteries. Is there something wrong with the charger or do I not have something hooked up right or ???
